Distribution: Tissue Distribution: Cerebral cortex neurons in layers II-VI, and pyramidal neurons.
Cellular distribution: Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, nucleus, and cytoplasm in neuronal cell body and dendrites.
Function: Neurogranin is a neuron-specific, calmodulin-binding protein that participates in the protein kinase C signaling pathway. Neurogranin is a post-synaptic protein that modulates Ca²⁺ homeostasis in neurons by binding to and regulating the availability of calmodulin in the absence of Ca²⁺. Neurogranin function has been implicated in learning and memory.
