- Structure
- FMRP is a 632 amino acid protein with a molecular mass of ~71 kD.
- Distribution
-
Tissue Distribution: Ubiquitously expressed with higher expression levels in brain tissue.
Cellular distribution: Plasma membrane, nucleus, and cytosol.
- Function
- FMRP has been reported to be involved in synaptic plasticity, dendritic spine maturation as well as synapse formation. FMRP may play a role in gene silencing by acting as translation regulator.
- Interaction
- FMRP interacts with the RNA binding proteins such as FXR1P, FXR2P and 82-FIP. FMRP can also interact with the cytoplasmic proteins CYFIP1 and CYFIP2 which then interacts with eIF4E thus linking FMRP to the RhoGTPase signaling pathway.
- Ligand/Receptor
- mGluR stimulation leads to increased FMRP expression.
- Cell Type
- Neurons
- Biology Area
- Neurodegeneration, Protein Synthesis
- Molecular Family
- Postsynaptic proteins, Presynaptic proteins
