Structure
FMRP is a 632 amino acid protein with a molecular mass of ~71 kD.
Distribution

Tissue Distribution: Ubiquitously expressed with higher expression levels in brain tissue.
Cellular distribution: Plasma membrane, nucleus, and cytosol.

Function
FMRP has been reported to be involved in synaptic plasticity, dendritic spine maturation as well as synapse formation. FMRP may play a role in gene silencing by acting as translation regulator.
Interaction
FMRP interacts with the RNA binding proteins such as FXR1P, FXR2P and 82-FIP. FMRP can also interact with the cytoplasmic proteins CYFIP1 and CYFIP2 which then interacts with eIF4E thus linking FMRP to the RhoGTPase signaling pathway.

mGluR stimulation leads to increased FMRP expression.
