Product Description
Streptavidin is a biotin-binding protein originally isolated from Streptomyces avidinii. Unlike avidin, streptavidin is non-glycosylated and has a mildly acidic pI of 5. The recombinant form of streptavidin used in this product has a molecular weight of 53,000 daltons and a near-neutral pI. Streptavidin forms a tetrameric structure, with each subunit binding one molecule of biotin with high affinity, similar to avidin. It is more resistant to dissociation by guanidinium chloride compared to avidin.
Function
The biological function of streptavidin is not fully understood. It forms a strong, non-covalent, and specific complex with biotin (one biotin molecule per streptavidin subunit).
Subunit Structure
Subunit: Homotetramer (By similarity).
Subcellular Localization
Location: Secreted.
Sequence and Family
Similarity: Belongs to the avidin/streptavidin family. Contains one avidin-like domain.
